Sample Searches

This page gives examples of what results you can expect to get when searching the JobS database. Remember that selections within a category are joined by an OR; categories are joined by an AND.


If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Male
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected Gender "Male"
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who selected Gender "Female" or "Unspecified" or who left Gender blank

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Unspecified
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected Gender "Unspecified"
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who selected Gender "Female" or "Male" or who left Gender blank

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Blank
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected nothing under Gender
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who selected Gender "Female" or "Male" or "Unspecified"

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Any
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals in the database regardless of what they selected under Gender
But you will not get any of these:	You will actually get all records in the database with this search

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Any Ethnicity/Diversity: Hispanic/Latino/Latina
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected "Hispanic/Latino/Latina" regardless of what they selected under Gender
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who selected an Ethnicity other than "Hispanic/Latino/Latina"

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Female Ethnicity/Diversity: Any AOC: Ethics - Bioethics - Environmental Ethics
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected (Gender "Female") and (AOC "Ethics" or "Bioethics" or "Environmental Ethics"), regardless of what they selected under Ethnicity/Diversity
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who do not have at least one of the values you selected in Gender and AOC

If you select the following search criteria:	Gender: Female - Male Ethnicity: African-American - American Indian - Asian/Asian-American AOC: Philosophy of Logic - Logic AOS: Logic
You can expect to get the following hits:	All individuals who selected (Gender "Female" or "Male") and (Ethnicity African-American or American Indian or Asian/Asian-American) and (AOC "Philosophy of Logic" or "Logic") and (AOS "Logic")
But you will not get any of these:	Any individuals who do not have at least one of the values you selected in Gender, Ethnicity/Diversity, AOC, and AOS

As you can see from the examples above, the more criteria you select in your search, the fewer hits you will get. Therefore if your first search returns too few (or too many) hits, simply redefine the scope of your search as necessary and try again.
