Newsletter on Feminism and Philosophy

Joan Callahan

I’m pleased to welcome Joan Callahan as co-editor for the 1998-99 year. We have two very exciting issues planned for this year. This one is a special issue on feminist philosophy of emotion. We begin with an excerpt from Anger’s diary written by Elizabeth V. Spelman. Angela Bolte explores alternate definitions of rage as a morally justifiable response to particular situations. Megan Boler defends consciousness raising as a feminist pedagogy that recognizes emotions as potential sites of social resistance. Cheryl Hall argues that passion is as valuable as reason to political life and not more risky. We go back to rage with Andrea Nicki, who argues that dispassionate reflection is not always best for determining ethical response. Also included are our regular features: a book review and a conference report.
