APA Committee for Defense of
Professional Rights of Philosophers

2000 Report

Reports of APA Committees

Committee for the Defense of the Professional Rights of Philosophers

Michael Corrado, Chair

During the past year, the Committee received a number of informal inquiries from philosophers with various grievances, all resolved without Committee action.

The Committee also considered several more formal requests:

1. The Committee initiated action in one matter. A philosopher had been terminated from his job under conditions that raised the possibility of a serious violation of academic freedom. He has asked the Committee to censure the University. The Committee informed the University and the Department of the allegations and requested an explanation. The University has indicated to the Committee that it has undertaken an investigation of the allegations, and we are awaiting a response.

2. The Committee reopened a case that ended in censure a few years ago. The philosopher whose termination brought down APA censure on his Department has asked the Committee and the Board to intervene to help him reclaim his position. The Committee is considering the request.

3. A philosopher whose employment was not rehired after his first three-year probationary period has asked the Committee to investigate the circumstances of his hiring and termination. On the face of it, there is a possibility that his Department is hiring people in junior tenure-track positions without any intention of continuing them beyond the three year period. The Committee is considering action.

The Board asked the Committee for advice on a number of legal matters, including matters questions concerning the termination and hiring of Executive Directors.
