APA Committee on

Pre-College Instruction in Philosophy

2001 Report

May, 2002 (Volume 75, Issue 5)

Reports of APA Committees

Committee on Pre-College Instruction in Philosophy

Mark Weinstein, Chair

The main activity of the preceding year was the organization of presentations at the meetings of the divisions.

The Eastern Division Meeting session was organized by Betsy Newell-Decyk, the out-going Chair of the Committee. The topic was Sophie’s Travels: Children Doing Philosophy Around the World. Along with the meeting Chair, five participants were scheduled including speakers from Australia, Brazil and Israel.

At the business meeting at the Pacific Division Meeting, 2000 it was decided that the next three division meetings be focused on opportunities for philosophers in teacher education drawing upon the experience of philosophers at Montclair State University where a number of graduate programs at the masters and doctoral levels have successfully integrated philosophical content and methods into the education of teachers. Accordingly the Pacific and Central Divisions meetings addressed this theme.

At the Pacific Division a panel of five philosophers, including faculty from Montclair State University, presented various models for integrating courses taught by philosophers into teacher education programs. At the Central Division, a discussion of the main topic was included along with a panel of paper presentations by four philosophers who discussed The Philosophers’ Child by Gareth Matthews. The panel which included Matthews presented various philosophers’ perspectives on childhood and education.

The upcoming Eastern Division Meeting session will be cosponsored with the Committee on the Teaching of Philosophy. The theme will be the role of philosophers in teacher education and will include both practical and theoretical approaches to the topic.

The newsletter of the Committee, "Questions," edited by Jana Mohr Lone, had its first editorial meeting at the Pacific Division meeting.
