APA Committee on
Pre-College Instruction in Philosophy

Committee Report
1997

The following appears in Volume 71, Number 5 (May, 1998) of the Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical Association.

David B. Martens, Chair

For the sixth consecutive year, the Committee sponsored sessions at all three APA Division Meetings in 1996-1997. Although attendance has been variable, the Committee intends to continue sponsoring such sessions. They afford important opportunities for many APA members: Those who teach at the college and university level can become aware of the significance of philosophy education in the kindergarten through high school years; graduate students in philosophy can become aware of pre-college philosophy teaching as a career option; and teachers of pre-college philosophy can network with other pre-college practitioners and with others interested in the field

The Committee continues regularly to publish a sign-up form in the Proceedings and Addresses, soliciting information about people currently or recently participating in pre-college philosophy teaching or with a special interest in the field. The collected information is very important to the Committee when arranging conference sessions and when making referrals in answer to outside inquiries. As it is becoming substantial, the Committee is now converting the body of collected information into a computerized database.

Most outside inquiries are for information about getting started teaching pre-college philosophy, or for information about curricular materials. To provide an efficient way of distributing information of this sort, and to provide an additional means of increasing awareness of pre-college philosophy, the Committee is publishing a pamphlet, written by Hugh Taft-Morales, and titled "So You Want to Teach Pre-College Philosophy?". As well, the content of the pamphlet and links to other resources have been added to the Committee’s home page on the APA’s web site.
