My aims are to introduce students to various problems and the literature on teaching philosophy, to develop their capacities to contribute to the scholarship of teaching through book reviews written for the journal TEACHING PHILOSOPHY and a term paper in the form of an article for TEACHING PHILOSOPHY. Seminar participants also prepare sample syllabi for various courses. The course was offered as an option under the quarter system in 1987 and 1981 (see chapter 27 of Tziporah Kasachkoff, In the Socratic Tradition: Essays on Teaching Philosophy (Rowman & Littlefield, 1998). It is now required of all students in Michigan State's PhD program in philosophy.
Most of the articles in the course pack are from the journal TEACHING PHILOSOPHY.
