Reflections

This is an online course in introduction to philosophy. Students never come to the school. The class is handled entirely via email and the website. Students must navigate the course successfully to obtain information.

My goals in the course involved getting online students to do original work and read a textbook and online lectures. I wanted to provide visual stimulation without subtracting from the seriousness of the course topics. I also wanted to provide students with the depth and breadth they would experience in a classroom setting.

Lectures, online discussions via listserv, and homework assignments all work well in this course. The group project is more difficult to navigate. Students have a tendency not to be reliable enough for the group project. When it's good it's very very good, otherwise. . .

I now only allow students who are getting A grades in the class contribute to a website project.

Online syllabi do not translate well on paper, as they consist of nested and interconnected sites, rather than a linear set of pages you would find in a traditional syllabus. This address is the course homepage, which links to the requirements, schedule, and homework pages.
