Reflections:
I hoped to problematize students' conventional wisdom concerning bioethics and then provide some ethical theories to provide them sophisticated ways to come to grips with these problems. I also wanted students to get used to working together on these problems, as I expect they will once they become nurses, PAs and doctors. To serve both goals, we read from an anthology with some theory but lots of applied articles. We also used real-life case studies (often drawn from the newspaper) and discussed them each week. Students wrote one page analyses of these case studies and collaborative papes on topics of their own choosing. The texts I used in the Fall 200 were not as focused as I had hoped, and as a result I had to fill in a lot of gaps and as a result will switch to the Beauchamp and Childress text in Fall 2001. The case studies worked very well and as as a result I intend to devote even more time to them.
