Committee on the
Teaching of Philosophy
Committee Report
1996
The following appeared in Volume 70,
Number 5 (May, 1997) of the Proceedings and Addresses of the American Philosophical
Association.
Gary Iseminger, Chair
The Committee sponsored special sessions at the Eastern
Division and Pacific Division meetings. Gary Iseminger organized and chaired a session on
issues in teaching in philosophically diverse departments. Joan McGregor organized and
chaired a session on teaching the philosophy of law.
The Committee did not sponsor a special session at the
Central Division meeting, since the Central Conference on Teaching Philosophy exists for
this purpose. In conjunction with the American Association of Philosophy Teachers,
however, the Committee did co-sponsor a workshop just prior to the Central Division
meeting. A keynote address by Peter French on Wednesday evening was followed the next day
by two sessions of three concurrent presentations each and a concluding plenary panel
discussion. The workshop was attended by approximately 30 people and was enthusiastically
received.
The AAPT and the Committee also co-sponsored a workshop
at the AAPT's biennial meeting in August at Old Dominion University. This was another
version of the workshop led by Martin Benjamin at the 1995 AAPT meeting. There were over
30 applications for the Old Dominion workshop of which 16 were accepted.
The practice of recognizing APA members who have recently
won teaching awards at a ceremony and reception during the Eastern Division meetings was
continued. Philip Quinn, Chair of the Board of Officers, presided.
As instructed by the Board of Officers, the Committee
pursued the possibility of sponsoring Distinguished Visiting Teacher appointments in
graduate departments. Inquiries to a sample of graduate departments revealed that most
were willing and several were eager to consider making such appointments. Further progress
in this matter will depend on clarifying in detail the terms under which and the
procedures according to which such appointments would be made and on securing funding.
