APA Statements on the Profession

Non-Tenure Track Faculty

The following statement was approved by the Board of Officers at its 1994 Meeting, based upon a more extensive set of guidelines prepared by the American Association of University Professors.

  1. Institutions should limit reliance on non-tenure track faculty.
  2. In circumstances in which an institution has legitimate needs for a specialized class of faculty in part-time or fractional time positions, the institution should have policies that provide for their long-term stability.
