Membership Information and Joining the APATo Join: For those who would like to join the Association, membership applications can be found at the bottom of this page. You may also contact Janet Sample, Membership Coordinator, at the National Office at (302) 831-1112 or by e-mail at jsample@udel.edu if you would like an application sent to you by mail. Types of Membership: The Association offers three types of membership: Regular (full), International Associate (for those who reside overseas), and Student Associate. Regular or International Associate membership is open to persons whose training in philosophy has been advanced and systematic enough to make them competent to teach the subject at the college or university level and/or to persons with special achievements in philosophy. To qualify for Student Associate membership, persons must be actively engaged in the study of philosophy at an accredited college or university. Each Regular member must choose a single Divisional affiliation–Eastern, Central, or Pacific–and has voting rights (if dues are current) at the business meetings or through mail ballots only in that one division. International and Student Associate members are not affiliated with a division and therefore do not have voting privileges. Membership benefits include: Subscriptions to the Proceedings and Addresses of the APA (5 issues per year) and the Jobs for Philosophers (4 issues per year); use of the Job Placement Service at Divisional meetings and the APA Job Seekers Database (where departments can view curriculum vitae of those seeking employment); eligibility to serve on APA Committees; eligibility to compete for the various APA Prizes and Awards; eligibility to submit papers for consideration on the three annual Divisional Meeting Programs; discounted hotel and registration rates at the Divisional Meetings; subscription discounts on a number of philosophy journals published outside the APA and book discounts at Divisional Meetings. Members can also access the Members Only section of the website (www.apaonline.org), which includes current and past issues of the APA Newsletters (a "web only" publication); current online editions of the Proceedings and Addresses and Jobs for Philosophers; additional job ads posted only to the website between printed editions of the JFP; the JFP-Alert Mailing List sign-up; a searchable listing of Conferences, Seminars, and Calls for Papers relevant to philosophers; and a listing of Grants and Fellowships of interest to philosophers.
Dues fees for each type of membership follow:
Emeritus Members: Members who have been in good standing for at least five years and have retired from full-time work due to age or ill health prior to September 1, 2006 are eligible to become emeritus members of the association beginning with the 2006-2007 year. Emeritus members do not owe dues. A request for emeritus status should be noted on the notice of dues, or may be submitted separately via email or in writing. (Contributions from emeritus members to the association’s funds are voluntary and greatly appreciated.) Changing Your Contact Information: Forms to change your postal, email, and homepage address appear on the APA website (www.apaonline.org) under the Members Only Section. You may also contact Janet Sample, Membership Coordinator, at (302) 831-1112 or jsample@udel.edu to report these and other changes, such as phone and fax numbers, that appear in member’s files on the Jobs Seekers Database. Changes or corrections will take effect beginning with the next publication scheduled for preparation following receipt of the change. Please be mindful of the copy deadlines for APA publications when reporting address changes since they are usually several weeks ahead of the mail date. Returned Check Policy: Checks returned to the Association by the bank on which they are drawn are subject to a $30.00 service fee. The files of members whose checks are returned are removed from the current database for mailings and other benefits until the amount of the check and the service fee are paid. APA Mailing Lists: The Association offers mailing labels that are updated on a continuing basis to publishers, organizers of conferences, and others who wish to communicate with members of the APA. This service provides supplemental income for the Association and facilitates the exchange of information concerning philosophical activity. All mailings are subject to approval by the Association before orders are filled. Organizations interested in renting labels from the Association should contact Lindsay Palkovitz by phone: (302) 831-2895 or email: lindspal@udel.edu for further information. Payments from Overseas and Canadian Members: Because of the costs in collection fees, the Association can accept checks drawn only on a United States bank in U.S. dollars or International Money Orders in U.S. dollars. The APA also accepts Visa and MasterCard. TO JOIN THE APA:If you would like to be considered for membership in the APA, please select the appropriate application from the list below and print it using your browser's "Print" command. Use your browser's "Back" command to return to this page. PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept applications by e-mail at this time. Since we do not have a secure site, please DO NOT send credit card information to the APA via e-mail. All applications require the candidate's written signature. FORMS
