The APA Board of Officers commissioned the Indiana University Public Opinion Laboratory to conduct (in 2001) a survey of the APA membership and the philosophical profession. The questions asked were developed by various APA committees, and they were asked of three separate groups: regular APA members, graduate student APA members, and philosophy departments (the response rates were 29%, 36%, and 20%, respectively). Below, please find the results of the survey, along with an analysis by the Indiana Lab. We welcome your comments on any aspect of the survey, the results, or the analysis.

Please understand that this survey is not the end of the APA's efforts to gather data on its members and the philosophical profession; on the contrary, we are just beginning. We are developing a web-based (and thus inexpensive) method of gathering longitudinal data in the future. In doing so, we will rely heavily on your cooperation. To earn your cooperation, we need to ask questions that you agree are important so that we can gather data that you recognize as important.
