The Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto seeks a postdoctoral fellow to help explore long-term conceptual, social, political, and legal impacts of computing and information technology. Duties include: coordinating (and editing proceedings of) series of semi-annual international conferences on the impact of computation on the human condition. 217. MCGILL UNIVERSITY, Montreal, QUEBEC, Canada. Faculty Position. Environmental Ethics. The Department of Philosophy and the McGill University School of Environment (MSE) invite applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to begin in August 2006. For this joint position, we seek an outstanding moral philosopher whose research interests centrally include the ethical issues posed by our relation to the environment. We seek candidates excellent in research and teaching, with broad philosophical interests, able to engage actively with philosophers in a broad range of research interests, above all with the theoretical ethicists already at McGill, and with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines affiliated with the MSE. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students in both units, and to play a role in the further development of programmes within the MSE. Teaching load: four (undergraduate and graduate) courses per year (two in each semester), split between the MSE and the Department of Philosophy, together with graduate and undergraduate supervision. Usual administrative responsibilities, divided between the two units. Ph.D. expected by time of appointment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. *218. QUEENS UNIVERSITY, Kingston, ONTARIO, Canada. The Department of Philosophy at Queen’s University has established a postdoctoral fellowship program in Democracy and Diversity, funded in part by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. The program will run from 2005-2008. Each year, one non-renewable 12-month fellowship will be awarded, salary commensurate with experience. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated expertise in political philosophy/political theory, with a special interest in issues of the accommodation of diversity in democratic societies, show evidence of teaching potential, and be able to participate constructively in the Departmental and collegial activities. The Fellow will work under the supervision of Prof. Will Kymlicka, and will be expected to teach two half-courses. The 2006-7 fellowship will start on July 1, 2006. Applicants must have submitted their doctoral dissertation by that date, and must be within five years of having received their doctorate. Queen’s University is a leading centre for the normative study of democracy and diversity, with active research programs located in both the Research Group on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multicultural Citizenship (RGONEMC) and the Forum for Philosophy and Public Policy. Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities and related Social Sciences, including one in Cognitive Science/Philosophy of Mind. The postdoctoral fellowships are to be awarded for a two-year period to outstanding teacher-scholars in the humanities and related social sciences, to begin July 1, 2006. Each fellow will be awarded CDN$50,000 per year. AREA: Cognitive Science/Philosophy of Mind (Department of Philosophy). The Department of Philosophy is interested in candidates working in the area of cognitive science and/or the philosophy of mind. In particular, we encourage applications from promising researchers exploring fundamental questions about the mind who are also well informed about current scientific theories of psychological development, the brain, and artificial intelligence. The fellow will complement and build upon the existing curriculum in philosophy of mind, and be a potential contributor to the program in Cognitive Science. The appointment carries departmental affiliation and includes both a teaching and a research component. Successful recipients will be required to teach one course per term and devote other time to their individual research. To qualify for an appointment, candidates must have received their Ph.D. within the last 2 years. Candidates who will receive their Ph.D. degree by June 30, 2006, are eligible to apply; however, they must submit a letter of degree confirmation.
