1. ALDEN MARCH BIOETHICS INSTITUTE, Albany, NY. Position Title: Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics. Organization Description: The newly established Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) seeks candidates to develop an ethical, legal, and social issues research program in the three areas of bioterrorism research, neuroimaging, and bionanotechnology, in collaboration with the College of Nanotechnology, the GE Healthcare/AMC Neurosciences Institute and the Ordway Research Institute. AMBI is a multi-institutional bioethics program based in the unique Albany Medical College and Medical Center in Albany, New York, and supported by more than $3 million in NIH and HRSA bioethics research funding. AMBI offers the masters in bioethics as well as dual degree programs in bioethics and law, philosophy, public health, and social work. Faculty and Fellows in the Institute represent the unique educational, research, and government institutions in New York’s capital district. The Institute’s location allows its unique focus on the relationship between state policy and bioethics, and the metropolitan area’s strength in nanotechnology, bioterrorism research, genomics and newborn screening, and imaging allows Institute faculty to work on bioethics at the vanguard of science and medicine. Position Description: The ideal candidate will have research experience related to neuroethics, ethics in nanotechnology and/or bioterrorism, and interest in the issues that cross the fields, such as ethics and clinical trials, ethical issues in the allocation of scarce resources, and ethics in innovation. Background or experience and interest in bioethics will be a significant asset. This person will be expected to do research, publish, engage in public outreach, and consult with policymakers. Teaching at the graduate and professional level in one of the AMBI institutions is possible but not an emphasis for this position. In addition, this person will participate with the board and leadership team in determining the Center’s strategic direction. Qualifications: Candidates should have a doctorate, expertise in public health or the social sciences, and demonstrated research and teaching ability. We seek candidates whose research and teaching will address the ways in which values and ethics should inform and guide both science and medicine. Any research program in political theory or political philosophy will be considered. Fellows will teach one course per semester, participate in Brown’s Political Philosophy Workshop (convened by Corey Brettschneider, David Estlund, Charles Larmore, John Tomasi), and pursue their own research. Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Harvard’s new university-wide Ethics and Health Program devoted to furthering research and teaching in ethical issues arising in health care and public health. Fellowship draws on work in analytic moral and political philosophy to focus on ethical issues in health policy and population and international health, including health system reform, social inequalities in health, controversies arising over international health research involving human subjects, and ethical dilemmas in the practice of public health. Hallmarks of work in this area are concern with health as well as health care, an emphasis on the developing world, engagement with economists and epidemiologists, expanding bioethics to address issues raised by demographic trends, attention to state responsibilities, and constraints in public health. Fellowship directed toward individuals who want to add ethics and health to their field of competence. We also welcome applications from individuals who want to pursue work in more traditional bioethics. Ethics and Health Post-Doctoral Fellows participate in weekly tutorial, the program’s seminar series and working groups, may take appropriate courses, and pursue own research under direction of faculty mentor. The Division of Medical Ethics within the Department of Social Medicine invites applications for two new tenure-track Assistant Professors (3-year renewable appointment) to begin in September 2006. The Division seeks candidates with outstanding records and promise who will contribute to its expanding research program in bioethics. 28. QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY, Hamden, CT. Albert Schweitzer Professor of Applied Ethics and Social Responsibility. Quinnipiac University seeks a senior scholar to be the first holder of the Albert Schweitzer Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Applied Ethics and Social Responsibility. The most competitive candidates would hold a Ph.D. in philosophy with a specialization in applied ethics and have a strong record of scholarship consistent with appointment at the full professor level. The appointment is for one or two years and is available as of Fall 2006. We envision that the Schweitzer Professor would be involved in teaching beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries, possibly through a series of lectures or seminars in his/her area of expertise to faculty and/or students.
