10. ST. MARY’S UNIVERSITY, San Antonio, TX. Assistant Professor of Philosophy. St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas, established in 1852 and sponsored by the Society of Mary, is the oldest Catholic University in the Southwest, with a mission to foster a community of faith in which people of varied traditions and experiences unite in commitment to an educational venture, in dedication to a life of scholarship, and in service to society. Staffed by lay men and women and members of the Society of Mary, St. Mary’s is a coeducational institution with 4100 students in five schools. The Department of Philosophy of six tenured members and a similar number of adjuncts provides a three-course, nine-hour sequence in the core curriculum to all undergraduate students in all disciplines. An undergraduate major and minor are offered, as well as a B. Phil, intended primarily for seminary students completing pre-theology requirements, and a dual M. Div/B.Phil in cooperation with the Oblate School of Theology. In 2006, there are 26 philosophy majors and as many minors. The department also provides courses to other departments and programs. The philosophy department is seeking a philosophical generalist. The successful candidate will have both strong disciplinary knowledge and interdisciplinary background and interests in order to contribute to the department’s mission within the University. Evidence of undergraduate teaching experience and promise of scholarly contribution to the discipline are also required. AOS: Ancient-Medieval (including Aquinas) metaphysics. AOC: preferably epistemology, but open except for ethics. The successful candidate will complement the department’s strengths. Competence in the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition of philosophy and working familiarity with the critical realism of Bernard Lonergan are essential for participating in the department’s mission. Duties will include four courses (12 hours) undergraduate teaching each fall and spring semester, distributed among: our Introductory course, “Experience to Meaning”; our Foundational Ethics course; and upper division electives. Summer teaching is available. Participation in advising and other non-teaching duties is expected. Salary is competitive. We encourage applications from women and minority candidates. Send CV, teaching documentation, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample to Dr. Glenn Hughes, St. Mary’s University, Department of Philosophy, One Camino Santa Maria, San Antonio, TX 78228-8566.
