21. UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA, Victoria, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada. Canada Research Chair. Aristotelian Philosophy. The University of Victoria invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Aristotelian Philosophy. CRCs are prestigious appointments funded by the Government of Canada. Tier 2 Chairs were created for excellent emerging scholars acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead their fields of study. Each CRC appointment is accompanied by funds to support the Chair holder’s research. Tier 2 CRC appointments are normally made at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level; exceptional candidates may be appointed at a more senior level but normally candidates must have received a doctorate within the past 10 years. Any successful applicant will hold a regular position within the Department of Philosophy with eligibility for tenure. In accordance with the regulations governing Canada Research Chairs, the best-qualified candidate will be appointed, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. Chair nominations are adjudicated by a peer review administered by the CRC secretariat and appointments are conditional upon approval. General information about CRCs may be found at www.chairs.gov.ca. The Department of Philosophy seeks an outstanding philosopher working on Aristotle, Aristotelianism and the continuing significance of Aristotle for contemporary philosophical issues. Mastery of ancient Greek is expected. Other relevant languages are assets. Duties emphasize research and graduate student training, but will include undergraduate instruction and administrative service. The Department of Philosophy provides programmes of study leading to the degrees of BA, BA (Hons.) and MA; plans for a Ph.D. programme are well underway. The Department offers a comprehensive programme of study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The undergraduate programme provides students with core courses on ethics, logic and the history of ancient and modern philosophy. All main areas of philosophy are represented in the curriculum. The Department takes pride in a strong record of research and publication. Strengths of the Department include aesthetics, applied ethics, ethics, logic, political philosophy, history of philosophy, metaphilosophy, metaphysics, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and philosophy of science. The University Library has extensive holdings in Aristotelian Philosophy. Applications should include a CV, a statement of research interests and a writing sample and should be sent to: Dr. James Young, Chair, Department of Philosophy, University of Victoria, P.O. Box 3045, Victoria, B.C., V8W 3P4 Canada. joy@uvic.ca. web.uvic.ca/philosophy. Three confidential letters of reference should be sent directly to the Chair. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The Department hopes that the successful applicant will take up the position on July 1, 2008. The University of Victoria is an equity employer and encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, Aboriginal Peoples, people of all sexual orientations and genders, and others who may contribute to further diversification on the University.
