Jobs for PhilosophersInstructions for Applicants Regarding Positions Listed in Jfp1. Applicants should write institutions advertising in JFP only if they are qualified for the position advertised. A flood of mail from unqualified applicants undermines the APA placement effort. 2. Applicants should send to the persons named in the notice of vacancy either a letter of inquiry or a letter expressing their wish to be considered for the position listed, a complete dossier (letters of reference, teaching evaluations, etc.), and a curriculum vitae including (a) names and addresses of references; (b) title of dissertation and dissertation supervisor; (c) publications, if any; (d) extent to which Ph.D. requirements have been completed as of date of application; (e) expected date of completion of remaining requirements; (f) areas of specialization and competence; and (g) teaching experience, if any. The job notice will specify if complete dossier is not to be sent. 3. Applicants should communicate directly with the person named in the published listing. They should not communicate with the APA. 4. Applicants who wish to have their correspondence acknowledged by departments should enclose a stamped postcard addressed to themselves with space for the signature or initials of a department officer. Departments listing openings will try to return all such postcards. No further acknowledgment should be expected, though many departments do eventually write to all applicants. 5. If no deadline is printed with a notice, the job must be held open for at least one month after the mailing date of JFP. |
