Napster or not to Napster
Marcel Daguerre and Anthony Graybosch, Philosophy, CSU Chico

A panel discussion on the ethics of using Napster in the context of intellectual property rights as applied to works of art in popular music. Marcel Daguerre (Philosophy, CSU Chico) will maintain that the downloading of a Napster file without the permission of the artist or rights holder is tantamount to theft. Anthony Graybosch (Philosophy, CSU Chico) will argue that works of art are primarily part of a culture's commons and that there is nothing wrong with sharing music without an artist's or rights holder permission via Napster.

Making Complex Information Available to Visually Disabled Users
John Gardner, Oregon State University

A research program that began when an Oregon State University scientist, John Gardner, lost his eyesight in mid-career has created an important new technology that will help visually-impaired readers study and work in the complex world of mathematics and science. This new "graphics embosser" computer printer can produce a combination of Braille and tactile graphics directly from most Microsoft Windows computer applications.
