Letter from the Secretary-Treasurer

Pacific Division Meeting

To All Members of the Association:

The Executive Committee of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association invites you to attend the 76th annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association, Pacific Division, which will be held at the Westin Hotel in Seattle, Washington, from Wednesday, March 27th, through Sunday, March 31, 2002.

The Westin Hotel is in the center part of downtown Seattle, a short walk from the Seattle Harbor, the Seattle Art Museum, and many galleries, shops and restaurants. Also within a short walk is the historic Pike Place Market, stretching along seven acres of the waterfront, where you can purchase (or ship home) fresh and smoked salmon and shellfish, exotic mushrooms, and an unparalleled variety of fresh berries and herbs, locally made preserves and cheeses.

Cross the street from the Westin to catch the monorail to the Space Needle, Amusement Park, and Science Center or Metro Transit (no charge to downtown sites and the International District) to Pioneer Square for antiques, used books, and music clubs. Or walk to Belltown for more restaurants and clubs. Board a Seattle Harbor Tour boat to Tillicum Village, where you can dine on salmon baked over an alderwood fire while watching Northwest Indian dances.

Overnight or daytrip on the Victoria Clipper to visit Victoria in British Columbia, or go out to Bainbridge or the San Juan Islands in the Sound, or go whale watching. You can also tour, or go to Victoria, on a seaplane, or take a scenic flight on a vintage biplane. Or rent a car and spend a day enjoying Washington’s spectacular scenery. There are many recreational areas within 90 minutes drive.

The address of the Westin Hotel is 1900 Fifth Avenue, Seattle WA 98101. Phone is 206-728-1000. FAX is 206-728-2259.

The Westin extends an especially warm welcome to families with children. Notify the Westin’s Kids Club of your children’s ages when you make your reservation, and they will receive bags with gifts when they check in. A full range of children’s furniture and child-proofing devices can be borrowed from the Front Desk. The Westin makes no charge for children up to age twelve sharing their parents’ room. The concierge can make arrangements for child care, or for one of Seattle’s special tours for children (independent children need not be accompanied by a parent). Or walk with your family across the street from the hotel and take the monorail to Seattle Center to visit the Space Needle, Children’s Museum, Children’s Theater and Puppet Theater, and the Fun Forest, with its roller coaster, log flume, and other amusements.

Special Invitation to the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, Canada:

Victoria, Canada, is a short ferry ride (and even shorter seaplane flight) from Seattle. It is a beautiful small city, with almost everything within walking distance. Go "up island" by train or bus for spectacular scenery and to visit native villages.

The APA, Pacific Division, has made a special pre-convention arrangement for our members at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, in Victoria, a spectacular historical building that provides top class accommodations and dining. Its afternoon teas are famous, and its northwest cuisine restaurant offers an unparalleled variety of both regional and European wines. Walk across the street to the Bay and choose among the many tour boats that will take you to visit Victoria’s resident pods of orcas (you may select a comfortable glass enclosed boat, or an open pontoon whose operator will clothe you in waterproof overalls to make the journey). Or cross from the hotel in another direction to enjoy the outstanding native art in Victoria’s museum.

The APA rate for a single or double room at the Empress, on March 26-27, before the Seattle Pacific Division Meeting, is the Canadian equivalent to U.S. $91, a great bargain considering the quality of the hotel. (The U.S./Canadian rate of currency exchange usually is very favorable to holders of U.S. dollars.) Many of you will be in spring break the week of the APA meeting and will have the opportunity to enjoy Victoria. A hotel reservation form is in the back of this Proceedings, after the Seattle Westin reservation form.

The 2003 Program Committee also welcomes suggestions for topics and/or speakers of invited sessions. Recommendations (including self-nominations) for commentators and session chairs are encouraged and should be sent to the Program Chair, Nicholas D. Smith (Lewis and Clark). His email address is ndsmith@lclark.edu. When volunteering someone other than yourself, please be sure your nominee is willing to participate in the program. Nominations should reach the program committee by October 1, 2002, and should include a short vita or other account of the individual’s areas of specialization and record of scholarship.
